Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI)
Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Built up area: 11,000 sq.m ZIAS partnered with Black & Veatch as a key-subcontractor on this project together with other US-based specialized sub-consultants. In close consultation with EPHI, the joint team designed this new National Reference Laboratory (NRL) to serve as Ethiopia’s center for national research, surveillance activity, epidemic investigation and referral testing. The seven-story building, with a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) containment level, is divided into a laboratory block and an office wing with a central block situated in between for circulation and general building support. The design team gave special consideration to the Institute’s projected growth and mapped out the cost of the building’s life cycle, biosafety and security (BS&S) systems and equipment to facilitate EPHI’s capacity to sustain the NRL over the long term. |
