Gonder Comprehensive Out-Patient Department (OPD)
Project: Comprehensive outpatient department
Client: United States Government
Project completion: 2014
Project cost: $6.8 million USD
Location: Gonder, Ethiopia
Built up area: 6,700 sq.m
This new, comprehensive OPD will serve as the nucleus for a forthcoming hospital complex next to the existing University of Gondar Hospital. The two-story facility houses all OPD functions, including an ER unit, surgical and medical departments and a laboratory among other facilities. ZIAS undertook design, contract administration and construction supervision for this project.
To complement the modern hospital functions of the interior, ZIAS’s design for the exterior is consistent with the rich tradition of architecture in Gondar. The facade of the OPD building, with its grand arched window frames and battlement stonework, reflects the aesthetics of the Royal Enclosure located in this historical city.
